In the “normal” great dodecahedron, the twelve faces are intersecting, regular pentagons. In this “peephole” version, those pentagons have smaller pentagonal holes in them. With either the normal or “peephole” version, the convex hull of the figure would indeed be an icosahedron. The great dodecahedron may also be seen as a faceted icosahedron.
